Yoga On York’s 200+ hour Teacher Training, The Science and Art of Teaching Vinyasa Yoga is designed to enable serious yoga students and allied health professionals to become knowledgeable Yoga teachers. This Teacher Training is influenced by the Ashtanga, Iyengar and Bishnu Gosh lineages and emphasizes how to safely and effectively teach 50 yoga postures (asanas) in the Vinyasa (breath-to-movement) Style at the following levels: - Foundations / Beginners Level / Gentle Level
- Slow Flow Level
- Intermediate Level
The Science Using anatomical models, graphic illustration, hands-on palpation and posture laboratories you will develop a proficient understanding of body biomechanics, alignment, and anatomy in relationship to yoga postures. You will develop the ability to “see” muscles, joints and bones in action in yoga. Using current research-based information, you will learn about common Western injuries and ailments (such as bulging discs, fused vertebrae, osteoporosis, rotator cuff injuries, carpal tunnel and more) that commonly “walk in” to every yoga class. You will learn the indications, contraindications and limitations of yoga for these conditions and how to safely teach the yoga postures when these conditions are present. Yoga On York’s Teacher Training curriculum places a heavy emphasis on The Science of Teaching Yoga, thus providing a strong foundation from which to confidently teach yoga postures safely and effectively to people of all ages and levels.
The Art With guidance, you will learn, practice, and refine your skills of observation, adjusting yoga postures, informative instructing, and the qualities of an effective yoga teacher. You will cultivate your personal art of orchestrating yoga classes including: language, tempo, sequencing, assisting and creating safe space for personal transformation. In our safe environment, you will begin the inspirational journey of finding your authentic voice as a yoga instructor. Curriculum Hours Include: 200 contact hours = contact hours are classroom hours in the physical presence of a Yoga On York faculty member plus, 75 non-contact hours = consists of taking 40 Yoga On York regular classes (50 hours) and 25 hours of study assignments to reinforce classroom information.
- Techniques Training - 85 hours - includes detailed analytical training in how to practice and teach 50 yoga postures (asanas) and Sun Salutations A & B at the beginner's level, slow flow level, and intermediate level; how to practice and teach Ujjayi, Kapalabhati and Alternate Nostril Breathing; bandhas; meditation practice, proper body mechanics, postural alignment and asana alignment
- Teaching Methodology - 26 hours- including principles of demonstration, observation, assisting/correcting, instruction, teaching styles, qualities of a teacher, orchestrating a class, and the business aspects of teaching yoga
- Anatomy & Physiology - 33.5 hours - including anatomic planes, skeletal system, muscular system (including muscle action: agonist, antagonist, synergist, or stabilizer), stretching physiology, stretching biomechanics, Anatomy of Breathing, Yoga and The Spine, Shoulder Girdle and Pelvic Girdle, nervous system, the effect of yoga breathing on the nervous system, the effect of yoga on the circulatory system, lymphatic system and myofacial system, Stability vs. Mobility, Women's Issues and Yoga, indications/contradications of yoga for common Western injuries and diagnosis, preventing yoga injuries, current researched based information, Chakras, Nadis and Energy Fields
- Yoga Philosophy/ Lifestyle and Ethics for Yoga Teachers - 22.5 hours - including study of yoga history, main branches of yoga, different schools of Hatha Yoga, history of Ashtanga Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga, Pantajali's Eight Limb Path, Yamas and Niyamas, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga by Deepak Chopra, Yoga Lifestyle: Relaxation, Conscious Eating, Karma Yoga, The Four Agreements
- Practice Teaching / Practicum - 33 hours - Throughout the training you will practice teaching gradually larger and larger portions of set Vinyasa sequences one-on-one and in small groups to fellow students. You will receive feedback from fellow students and faculty. Teaching Practicum includes teaching 3 complete classes: one to a fellow student; one to a group of five fellow students and the final teaching practicum will be teaching a regular drop-in style class at YOGA ON YORK.
- Non-Contact, Assigned Hours - 75 hours - includes taking a minimum of 40 yoga "drop-in" style classes at YOGA ON YORK (this equals 50 non-contact hrs; these classes are included in the price of Teacher Training tuition) and approximately 25 hours of assignments to support the in-class work
Pre-requisites for Participation
- A minimum of 6 months consistent, home or studio yoga practice at some time in your life. This does not need to have been the previous 6 months. (consistent=minimum average of 3x per week).
- Completion of a college level Anatomy and Physiology with passing grade
- Need college transcript or certificate of completion
- Can take the course online at: www.universalclass.com , Couse Number 30444 ($80)
- Must have completed online Lesson 13 of 16 total lessons by the start of Teacher Training
